Far-right Pressure on Adult Education and Language Provision for Adult Refugees and Migrants

Adult and continuing education are under pressure from the right. While discrimination and restrictive integration policies are widely discussed, the specific role of far-right pressure is often not explicitly addressed. This article, therefore, examines how far-right influences affect language provision for migrants through a scoping review of the existing literature. Based on ten included publications, the findings show that far-right pressure reshapes both policy frameworks and public discourse around language provision, with mainstream parties increasingly adopting far-right positions. Language provision is redefined from a social right to an instrument of control, embedded in narratives of cultural threat and national unity that promote monolingualism and assimilation, reinforced by neoliberal logics that affect funding, implementation, and participation. The review further identifies significant gaps in the literature regarding far-right influence on language provision and counterstrategies.
