Characteristics of national student populations
With the adoption of the Principles and Guidelines for the Social Dimension, the ministers of the European Higher Education Area have committed to "strengthening the social dimension of higher education and fostering equity and inclusion to reflect the diversity of society", an endeavour that involves creating higher education systems that are inclusive and supportive of the access, participation, progress, and completion of all students, with a special emphasis on those who are vulnerable, disadvantaged, or underrepresented. The EUROSTUDENT survey covers many aspects of student diversity, including gender, age, students with children, migration background, and disability. This chapter presents data on these aspects, as well as students' experiences of discrimination based on various aspects of diversity. The data presented in this chapter underscore that student populations across Europe vary significantly along these dimensions.
