International academics at German universities: from postdoc to professorship
The article analyses the path of international academics to a professorship at German universities. International academics experience the transition from the postdoc phase to professorship very differently. Information and advisory services, research support, the social, educational and health system, personal environment and quality of life were consistently given favourable reviews. They report both positive and negative experiences with regard to the support available to their life partner, family-friendly services, social and academic integration and the culture of welcome. By contrast, the main problems were related to the non-transparent appointment procedure, the lack of multilingualism at the university and in everyday life, inadequate accommodation and processes at the immigration office.
