In einigen Ländern der südlichen Saharazone (SSA) steigt die Nachfrage nach Fachkräften. Ein durchgängiges System der beruflichen Aus- und Fortbildung ist in der Region jedoch noch nicht etabliert. Im August 2016 fand in Windhoek (Namibia) ein Symposion mit Teilnehmer:innen aus Wissenschaft und Praxis der Subsaharastaaten, Europa, Australien und Asien statt, auf dem Perspektiven und Konzepte der Berufsbildung für die Region im Mittelpunkt standen. Veranstalter des Symposions, das von der Volkswagen Stiftung gefördert wurde, war die Namibia University of Science and Technology. Der Band ¿Vocational Education and Training in Sub-Saharan Africa¿ dokumentiert die drei Sessions der Tagung. Themen sind Grundlagen für Vocational Education and Training (VET), die Etablierung eines VET-Systems sowie Konzepte und Bedingungen für erfolgreiche VET-Netzwerke, besonders in der Weiterbildung.
Die Autor:innen tragen Praxiswissen zur Situation der beruflichen Bildung in den afrikanischen Subsahara-Staaten zusammen, stellen Konzepte für die Entwicklung eines Systems zur beruflichen Ausbildung vor und geben einen Überblick über Strategien und Vorhaben verschiedener Länder und Institutionen.
